Raised Beds
There has been an immense amount of work put into our raised bed project this year. Eamon (with the help of Emer) sourced old pallets that we could use. Himself and Tom then spent many hours piecing them together and upcyling them into the raised beds you can see in the slideshow below. The children from 5th and 6th class then came out to help Eamon paint them all the beautiful colours that you can see on the finished product. The end result is fantastic well done to all involved! Each class cannot wait to go out and plant their vegetables and watch them grow.
We will keep regular updates and photos of the progress throughout the year so keep an eye on this page.....

Friends of the Environment
This year we have also added 2 'water butts' and a home-made composter to emhance out Green Schools campaign.
The composter :
The staffroom and each classroom have thier own mini compost bin. We fill these with pencil shavings, fruit, vegetables, tea bags and paper shavings (limited amount.) These bins are then emptied into the large composter outside along with leaves, old plants and grass cuttings. These then have to be kept moist throughout the year and as time goes on the heat and moisture together will create a perfect environment for the much needed worms to work their magic. The end result provides great conditioning and nutrition for our raised beds.
Water Butts:
The water butts are connected to the gutters and they collect rain water. These are then used for watering our plants, wildflowers and raised beds. This is an ongoing project that is part of our Green Schools initiative for saving water.

Green Schools 2020/2021
Our theme this year for Green Schools is Litter and Waste.
Our Green team gathered data before making up our school targets to reduce our litter and waste in school. Take a look at all our data gathered :)
The Green team worked hard at coming up with targets to be achieved after the data gathered was analysed. Here are our school targets :)
We held a slogan competition in school. Here is our winning slogan for this years Green Schools.
We have been busy in school setting up new bins, composting and decorating our new bug hotel (weather permitted). Have a look :)

Green Flag #5
Jack, Lucy and Michael on behalf of our school were delighted to have received our 5th Greem Flag for Biodiversity. It was in the Hodson Bay Hotel in Athlone. Hopefully the good work in caring for our environment will continue to be part of our school ethos. Huge thanks and a big well done to all staff and children.
March 2019
Our theme for Green Schools this year is Bio Diversity. We want to encourage wildlife into our school environment i.e. birds and insects but most especially pollinators to encourage plant fertilization. Our work plan so far has included, gathering fallen leaves in the Autumn to make leaf mould, tree planting and planting up containers with herbaceous plants, putting up bird feeders, seed sowing and upgrading our "Bug Hotel!"
Please keep an eye out fro our all our upcoming plans and ideas.

Green Schools
Clonaghadoo is a Green School and we are very proud of the fact that we currently hold 3 Green School Flags. There is a committee in the school that consists of one teacher and numerous students. The committee works tirelessly and endlessly to ensure that we retain our flags.
We recently entered Laois Tidy Schools competition and received a glowing review from visiting inspectors with a score of 99/100.
